23일 토요일은 대학동기 류진경의 결혼식으로 아침부터 강남 고속터미널에 갔다.
그리고 황망하게도 노무현 전 대통령이 돌아가셨다는 얘기를 전해들었다.
심지어는 그 방법이 절벽에서 뛰어내리는 형태의 자살이었다는 내용에 이르러서는 말문이 막혀 정말이냐고 되묻는 한정된 반응만을 언제까지고 보일 수 밖에는 없었다.
노무현 전 대통령.
대통령직을 벗어던지고 봉하마을로 내려와 '야~ 기분좋~다!' 고 외쳤던 사람이 과연 자신에게 '대통령님'이라는 거창한 칭호가 붙는 것을 기꺼워 했을까. 그렇지는 않았을 것이라고 본다.
그렇지만 그를 높이지 않는다면 도데체 이 나라에서 누굴 높여야 한단 말인가?
노무현'님'이라는 호칭이라면 그는 동의할까?
동의하지 않는다 해도 어쩔 수 없다. 나는 당신의 호칭에 최소한의 존칭이라도 붙이지 않으면 머리가 이상해져 버릴 정도로 당신을 존경하기 때문이다.
특히나 땅바닥에 늘러붙은 시커먼 껌딱지들에조차 선생님, 교수님, 박사님 하는 존칭을 붙이길 전혀 꺼려하지 않는 정신적 미숙아 혹은 정신적 파산자들이 풍기는 썩은내가 진동하는 이 세상에서 노무현이라는 사람에 대한 존경을 표하지 않는다면 그 악취에 취해 금방이라도 내가 졸도해 버릴 것 같은 심정이기 때문이다.
나는 노무현님을 존경했고 그를 시대의 어르신이었다 평가하고 있었기에 그를 잃은 내 세계는 지금 격심한 충격에 빠져있다.
2주일 전. 급작스럽게 들이닥친 엄마의 죽음조차 아직 삼키지도 못한 상황에서 장영희 서강대교수님과 노무현 전 대한민국 대통령의 죽음까지 같이 받아들여야 하는 내 처지가 너무너무 불쌍하다.
어쨌든 '그들'이 받들어 모시는 전지전능한 의미로서의 신이라는 게 없다는 건 알고 있다고 생각하고 있었건만 이번 일은 그 공상(空想)을 더욱 견고하게 만들어 주었다.
전두환도 살아있고 노태우도 살아있고 강만수도 살아있고 전여옥도 살아있고 부시도 살아있고 쥐박이도 살아있는데
노무현님은 자살을 '강요'당했고 도저히 맞설 수조차 없는 끝없이 거대한 절망과 암흑에 밀린 그는 그것을 받아들였다.
여기저기 타살설이 떠돌긴 하지만 어쨌든 그는 자살을 '강요'당했을지언정 그것을 스스로의 의지로 '선택'은 했으리라 생각한다.
보이지 않는 투명한 감옥에 갇혀서 자기가 만들어 낸 모든 것들을 부정당하고, 자기가 사랑한 모든 사람들이 고통받고, 자기가 믿었던 가치가 산산조각나며, 그 상황이 시간이 경과되어갈 수록 더욱 악화(惡化)될 일 밖에 남지 않았다는 현상과 직면한 자존심 강한 사람이 고를 수 있는 선택지라는게 과연 무엇이었을까.
나는 그의 자살을, 인정할 수는 없지만, 이해한다.
인간이 고려할 수 있는 모든 방위(方位)로부터 받은 스트레스로 인해 시야가 극도로 좁아진 그에게,
방아쇠는 그리 큰 것이 아니어도 그 발동(發動)에는 아무런 지장이 없었을 것임에 틀림없다.
쥐박이가 얼마나 미웠을까.
취임하자마자 한 짓거리가 정부조직 개편 - 말이 개편이지 사실상 조직을 통째로 들어내고 아예 다른 걸 갖다 심어버린 저 무식한 적출(摘出)과 이식(移植). 그나마도 노무신(神)의 흔적을 지우려고 그런 짓거리를 행해놓고는 잘 돌아가지 않으니까 나중에 은근슬쩍 원래의 조직을 복귀시키는 멍청하고도 한치앞도 보지못하는 쥐의 행각이 얼마나 한심하게 느껴졌을까.
참여정부동안 잘 끌어와서 이제 계약서에 도장만 찍으면 될 정도로 진전시켜 놓은 수많은 대형사업들과 계약들을 '노무신이 했다'는 이유만으로 취소시키고 걸레짝을 만드는 짓거리를 보면서 얼마나 통탄(痛嘆)을 했을까.
그렇게도 욕을 먹고 누더기가 될지언정 통과시켜 최소한의 안전장치(安全裝置)로서 기능하길 바랐던 부동산을 위시(爲始)한 수많은 정책들이 정권을 넘겨주자마자 뿌리째 뽑혀나가고 상상도 못할만치 극악(極惡)한 것들로 바뀌는 -심지어 자신이 아래에 두고 쓰던 관료들조차 그 짓에 합세하여 개지랄떠는 현상을 어떤 심정으로 바라보았을까.
썩은내가 나는 고인물같이 되어버린 정부조직으로는 도저히 불가능하겠다 싶어 만든 과거사, 5.18, 인권위원회 등의 수많은 위원회들이 폐지되고, 축소되어 결국에는 불구(不具)가 되는 과정을 지켜보며 얼마나 눈물을 속으로 삼켰을까.
쥐박이가 '전직대통령을 예우하는 문화를 만들겠다'고 능청떠는 말을 믿지는 않았지만 '그래도 사람이라면...'하고 그래도 지켜본 자신의 기대를 철저히 배신하고 난도질하고 짓밟고 사지를 찢어버릴듯이 들어덤비는 저 씨발놈이 얼마나 미웠을까.
적법한 절차에 따라 시행한 기록물반출에 거품물고 지랄떨면서도 어쨌든 지는 항상 뒤에 숨어서 유감이라며 찍찍거리는 저 쥐새끼가 얼마나 가증스러웠을까.
그런 쥐박이의 미친 행위를 보좌하고 수행하는 행위를 마치 자발적 노예처럼 실행했던, 혹은 해야 했던 청와대 사람들이 얼마나 안타깝고 불쌍했을까.
그 과정의 중심에서 쥐박이에겐 유리하게, 자신에게는 한없이 불리하도록 담론(談論)의 확대재생산에 앞장선 조중동을 위시한, 무가지보다 더욱 그 가치가 떨어지는 쓰레기 신문들과 하루종일 홈쇼핑전파만 주구장창 쏘아대는 케이블채널보다도 저급한 KBS, SBS들 방송국의 견고한 동맹에 얼마나 큰 절망감을 느꼈을까.
그런 정권의 나팔수들이 매초(每秒)마다 불어대는 독기서린 나팔에도 불구하고 그래도 내 사람이 그랬을리 없다하고 믿던 보좌관이, 의원이, 친구가, 형님이, 그리고 아내마저 결백하지만은 않았다는 사실에 직면해야 했을 때 얼마나 비탄해했을까.
그 먼지를 털어내기 위해 마치 일제시대 순사가 독립군을 고문하듯이 자기가 사랑하고 믿음을 준 사람들을 더럽고 치사하고 비열하고 치졸하며 또한 고통스럽게 괴롭히는 모습을 그 눈에 담고 그 귀로 들어야 하는 비참하고 잔인한 현실을 어떻게 견뎌낼 수 있었을까.
그리고,
자신이 혼을 다해 지난 5년동안 쏟아넣은 노력에도 불구하고 도데체 무엇 하나 성장한 데가 없는 저 국민이라는 이름의 미숙아들이 한데 입을모아 조중동이 만들어낸 공격논리를 그대로 받아 증폭시켜 귀청이 떨어져 나갈듯한 소음으로 한반도를 들썩이는 작태(作態)에 얼마나 마음으로부터 커다란 배신감을 느끼고 또 눈물을 흘렸을까.
대한민국에 민주주의의 불씨를 밝힌 상징적 인물로 김대중 전 대통령을 꼽을 수 있다면,
계급문화가 아예 그 유전자 속에 새겨져 있는 거대한 병영국가 대한민국에서 권위주의와 뒤틀린 계급사회의 부조리함을 타파하려고 한 인물로는 노무현 전 대통령님을 말할 수 밖에는 없다.
권위라는 건 걷어찰 것 밖에 그 효용성이 없는거라는 나의 소신을 대한민국 대통령의 위치에서 구체적인 행동으로 옮겼고 또한 그 소신을, 수 많은 풍파(風波)를 맞아가며 온 몸을 던져 관철하고 지켜냈던 사람.
그래서 나는 노무현님을 존경한다.
그래서 나는 노무현님을 위해 울 수밖에 없다.
대한민국에서 권위주의와 계급주의의 망령을 걷어내고자 했던 그의 뼈와 살을 깎아내는 노력은 극한까지 늘어난 스프링이 원래의 모습으로 돌아가려는 운동과 완벽하게 동일한 속도로 무위(無爲)로 돌아가고 말았다.
하지만 근조(謹弔) 라는 말은 노무현 전 대통령님께 붙여야 할 말이 아니다. 서거(逝去)라는 말 조차 권위를 걷어차던 그에게는 어울리지 않는 단어일 뿐이다.
그는 죽지조차 않았다.
이다지도 그를 기억하고 그의 죽음을 슬퍼하는 사람들이 전국 분향소에 끝없이 긴 줄을 늘어뜨리고 있다. 언젠가는 하나둘씩 그를 잊어가는 사람들도 나타나겠지만 그의 유지를 받들어 대한민국에서 친일파를 청소하고 권위주의를 걷어차 버릴 사람도 또한 나타날 것이다.
그렇다면 그는 죽은것이 아니다.
그는 우리들의 마음속에
또한 나의 마음속에
언제까지고 살아있을 것이다.
내가 죽을 때까지.
내가 그의 얘기를 해 준 나의 손자가 죽을 때까지.
그 손자의 손자가 또한 그 명을 다할 때까지.
관 앞에 서서 눈물 짤 필요는 없다.
그는 거기에 있지 않다.
그가 지키려고 했던 것이 내 마음속에 살아 숨쉴 수 있다면 근조라는 단어를 꺼낼 필요는 없다.
오히려 근조를 붙여야 할 대상은 따로 있다.
친일파 쥐박이와 한나라당,그리고 그의 수족들. 또한 그들에 동조하는 우둔한 국민들이 스스로를 무서운 속도로 침식하고 갉아먹고 있는지조차 깨닫지 못하고 있는 대한민국이야말로 근조해야 할 대상이다.
대한민국이라는 격(格)이 그 기능을 멈춘지는 벌써 1년도 2개월이나 지났지만 자신을 회복시켜주려는 의사(醫師
)를 목졸라 죽임으로 인해 실질적 뇌사판정을 받아버린 대한민국의 영정(影幀)에 나는 착잡한 심정으로 검은 리본을 매달 수 밖에는 없다.
